2. What motivated you to join Women Serve?
I have always been passionate about gender equality and empowering women and girls to achieve their full potential. The mission of Women Serve deeply resonates with me because it addresses the critical issues of access to education, health, and economic opportunities for women in underserved communities.
The organization's commitment to creating sustainable change by working directly with local communities and fostering self-reliance is particularly inspiring. I am drawn to Women Serve’s holistic approach, which not only addresses immediate needs but also invests in long-term solutions that empower women to become leaders and change-makers in their own lives and communities.
Our focus on collaboration and partnership is something I strongly believe in, as I have seen firsthand the impact that collective efforts can have in driving meaningful social change. Joining Women Serve allowed me to contribute to a cause that aligns with my values and leverages my skills in program management, strategic planning, and community engagement to make a tangible difference in the lives of women and girls
I have a background in Social Development, with 24 years of experience in specific areas like program management, community development, and women’s empowerment. My journey began during my school time when I joined hands with my school mentor to support disadvantaged women and girls.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on different thematic areas and roles, where I gained valuable insights on key skills and knowledge areas, such as strategic planning, partnership development, monitoring, and evaluation. These experiences have not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my commitment to social causes and values, such as gender equality and community empowerment.
My work with different organizations, roles, & projects allowed me to witness the profound impact that dedicated support and resources can have on underserved communities, particularly women and girls. This reinforced my belief in the importance of creating sustainable, community-driven solutions.
When I learned about Women Serve, I was immediately drawn to the mission and the opportunity to contribute to such meaningful work. The alignment between my background and the organization’s focus on empowering women and girls made it clear to me that this is where I can make a significant impact. I’m grateful to bring my experience, passion, and dedication to this role, and I look forward to contributing to the continued success and growth of this important mission.
3. Can you tell us about your previous work experience before joining Women Serve?
I have had the opportunity to work across a variety of roles and industries throughout my career. My experience spans the education, health, and livelihood sectors, where I have held leadership and management positions.
I served as the State Manager/Head for organizations like Room to Read and Educate Girls in Rajasthan, where I focused on promoting literacy, gender equality, and girls' education. These roles involved extensive program management, strategic planning, and collaboration with government bodies and local communities.
In the health sector, I worked as the Branch Manager for the Family Planning Association of India in Jaipur, managing reproductive and sexual health initiatives in collaboration with the government and international donors.
I also have experience in the Corporate sector, having worked as a Project Coordinator (Commercial) for Interarch Building Products Pvt. Ltd., where I handled various commercial activities, planning, and coordination.
Earlier in my career, I managed a Bharat Petroleum Corporation Retail Outlet in Jaipur, overseeing staff management, procurement, and customer relations.
I’ve also contributed to the family business and worked with several NGOs, including SOS, UNICEF, Digantar, and HelpAge India, which provided me with a broad perspective on project implementation and financial management in the non-profit sector.
Overall, my career has been a blend of roles in the non-profit, Corporate, and public sectors, all of which have provided me with a unique skill set and a deep understanding of the dynamics in these industries.
My past experiences have been instrumental in shaping the skills and insights I bring to my current role. Throughout my career, I have held various leadership and management positions across the education, health, and livelihood sectors, which have provided me with a strong foundation in strategic planning, program management, and collaboration.
For instance, during my tenure as State Manager/Head for Room to Read and Educate Girls in Rajasthan, I was responsible for overseeing large-scale programs focused on literacy and gender equality. This involved not only implementing and monitoring these programs but also developing strategic partnerships with government agencies, donors, and local communities. These experiences taught me the importance of aligning program goals with broader policy objectives and honed my ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments.
In my role with the Family Planning Association of India, I managed reproductive and sexual health initiatives, which required a deep understanding of both community needs and government regulations. This experience strengthened my skills in project implementation, government liaison, and donor management—skills that are crucial in my current role, where I continue to work closely with various stakeholders to drive impactful outcomes.
Additionally, my experience in the corporate sector as a Project Coordinator at Interarch Building Products Pvt. Ltd. equipped me with strong organizational and financial management skills. Handling corporate activities and coordinating complex projects in a fast-paced environment taught me how to manage resources efficiently and deliver results under pressure.
Overall, these diverse experiences have prepared me to excel in my current role by providing me with a well-rounded skill set, a strategic mindset, and the ability to lead initiatives that create sustainable impact.
There are several projects and accomplishments from my past roles that I am particularly proud of.
One of the standout projects was during my time as the State Manager/Head for Educate Girls in Rajasthan. I led a large-scale initiative aimed at increasing girls’ enrolment and retention in government schools across the state. This project involved close collaboration with the state government, local communities, and various stakeholders. Through targeted community engagement, advocacy, and capacity-building efforts, we were able to significantly improve school attendance and retention rates for girls in some of the most underserved regions. The success of this project not only contributed to the overall educational landscape in Rajasthan but also reinforced the importance of empowering local communities to drive sustainable change.
Another accomplishment I’m particularly proud of was during my tenure at Room to Read, where I oversaw the implementation of literacy programs that reached thousands of primary school children. We focused on developing a strong reading culture among young students, and our efforts led to measurable improvements in literacy rates. One of the highlights was the successful integration of life skills education for girls, which equipped them with the confidence and knowledge to navigate challenges both in and out of school. Seeing the positive impact these programs had on children’s lives was incredibly rewarding.
At the Family Planning Association of India, I managed a project in collaboration with the Rajasthan AIDS Control Society, focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention among high-risk populations. We implemented targeted interventions that not only raised awareness but also provided essential health services to marginalized groups. The project’s success was evident in the increased uptake of health services and improved health outcomes in the target districts. This experience was particularly meaningful because it underscored the importance of accessible healthcare and community-driven initiatives.
These projects stand out to me not only because of the positive outcomes they achieved but also because they exemplify the power of collaboration, strategic planning, and community involvement in driving lasting change. They have been pivotal in shaping my approach to my work and continue to inspire me in my current role.
4. How does your previous experience influence your work at Women Serve?
There are several key skills and lessons from my past experiences that I actively apply to my work here.
First and foremost, strategic planning is a skill I’ve honed over the years, especially in my roles with Educate Girls and Room to Read. In both organizations, I was responsible for developing and implementing large-scale programs that required careful alignment of resources, timelines, and stakeholder expectations. The ability to think strategically and plan effectively is something I carry with me in my current role, ensuring that our initiatives are both impactful and sustainable.
Another crucial skill is collaboration and networking. My work across various sectors has taught me the importance of building strong relationships with stakeholders, whether they are government officials, community leaders, or donors. For example, during my time at the Family Planning Association of India, I collaborated closely with the Rajasthan AIDS Control Society to implement health initiatives. The success of these initiatives was largely due to the partnerships we established, which is a lesson I apply today when fostering collaborations that drive our mission forward.
Monitoring and evaluation are also areas where I’ve gained valuable experience. In previous roles, I was deeply involved in tracking the progress of programs and making data-driven decisions to improve outcomes. This has instilled in me a strong appreciation for the role of monitoring and evaluation in achieving project success. I continue to apply this lesson by ensuring that we have robust systems in place to assess our work’s effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
Lastly, a significant lesson I’ve learned is the power of community engagement. In my work with Digantar Shiksha Evam Khelkud Samiti, I saw firsthand how involving local communities in decision-making leads to more meaningful and sustainable outcomes. This lesson has reinforced the importance of listening to and empowering the communities we serve, a principle that guides my approach to all our projects.
These skills and lessons have been invaluable in my current role, allowing me to contribute effectively to our organization’s goals and drive positive change
5. How has your journey shaped your approach to empowerment and community development?
My journey has deeply influenced my approach to empowerment and community development, shaping it into one that prioritizes sustainability, inclusivity, and collaboration.
Throughout my career, particularly in roles with organizations like Educate Girls and Room to Read, I’ve seen the transformative power of education in empowering individuals and communities. These experiences have taught me that true empowerment goes beyond providing resources; it’s about equipping people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to drive their own development. This belief has been at the core of my work, whether it’s been improving access to education for girls or supporting women’s health initiatives.
My work in diverse settings, from rural schools with Digantar Shiksha Evam Khelkud Samiti to health initiatives with the Family Planning Association of India, has reinforced the importance of tailoring interventions to the unique needs and strengths of each community. I’ve learned that successful community development is not a one-size-fits-all approach; it requires understanding the local context, involving community members in the decision-making process, and building on existing assets. This has shaped my approach to be more participatory and community-driven, ensuring that the solutions we implement are relevant and sustainable.
Moreover, my experience working with government bodies and NGOs has shown me the critical role that partnerships play in community development. Empowerment is most effective when it’s a collective effort, bringing together diverse stakeholders to work towards a common goal. This understanding has led me to prioritize collaboration in all my projects, whether it’s through fostering relationships with local leaders or working closely with government agencies to align our efforts with broader policy objectives.
Finally, my journey has taught me the importance of patience and persistence in empowerment work. Real, lasting change takes time, and it often requires navigating challenges and setbacks. But seeing the long-term impact of our work—whether it’s a girl who stays in school, a community that adopts better health practices, or an empowered group that takes charge of its own development—has reinforced my commitment to this approach.
In summary, my journey has shaped my approach to empowerment and community development into one that is inclusive, participatory, and collaborative, with a strong focus on sustainability and long-term impact
6. What do you find most rewarding about your work at Women Serve?
What I find most rewarding about my work at Women Serve is the direct impact we have on empowering women and communities in some of the most underserved regions. Seeing the tangible difference our programs make in the lives of women—whether it’s through improved access to education, health services, or economic opportunities—is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that our efforts help women gain the skills, confidence, and resources they need to uplift themselves and their families is what drives me every day.
One particular project that stands out to me is our WASH initiative, which focuses on enhancing women's access to clean water and sanitation in rural Rajasthan. This project was not only a logistical challenge but also a deeply impactful one. We worked closely with the local community to identify their needs and develop solutions that were both sustainable and culturally appropriate.
Through this project, we were able to construct rain water harvesting systems (taankas) that now provide clean drinking water to large households. What makes this accomplishment so significant is not just the immediate relief it brought to the community but also the long-term empowerment it fosters. Women in these communities are now leading efforts to maintain and expand these systems, turning what was once a daily struggle into a source of pride and self-sufficiency.
This project embodies what I find most rewarding about my work at Women Serve: the opportunity to create lasting change by empowering women to take charge of their futures. It’s projects like these that remind me why this work is so important and why I’m so passionate about what we do.
7. How do you feel your work makes a difference in the lives of women and girls?
I truly believe that my work makes a significant difference in the lives of women and girls by addressing critical needs and creating opportunities for empowerment and growth.
Firstly, by focusing on education, we are helping to break the cycle of poverty and create pathways for a brighter future. Our initiatives provide girls with the resources and support they need to stay in school and excel academically. This not only improves their immediate educational outcomes but also equips them with the skills and confidence needed to pursue higher education and career opportunities. The ripple effect of this is profound, as educated girls are more likely to become leaders, advocates, and change-makers in their communities.
Our efforts in economic empowerment also have a transformative impact. By providing women with skills training, resources, and support for entrepreneurship, we help them build sustainable livelihoods and gain financial independence. This not only enhances their economic security but also boosts their self-esteem and status within their families and communities.
Our approach to community development fosters environments where women and girls are valued and supported. We actively involve them in decision-making processes, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are addressed. This inclusive approach helps to build stronger, more resilient communities where everyone can thrive.
Seeing the positive changes in the lives of women and girls—whether it’s through improved educational attainment, better health outcomes, or increased economic opportunities—reinforces the importance and impact of our work. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness their growth and success, knowing that our efforts are contributing to a more equitable and empowered future.
8. How do you see the impact of Women Serve’s work in the communities we serve?
The impact of Women Serve’s water projects in the communities we serve has been transformative, addressing a fundamental need and creating a ripple effect of positive change. Access to clean water is not just about meeting a basic requirement; it significantly improves health, education, and economic stability in the communities we support.
One of the most impactful projects has been our Rainwater harvesting Taanka, aimed at improving access to clean and safe drinking water in Bap & Rohina. This project involved the installation of rainwater harvesting systems & nutrition gardens in several underserved communities.
A memorable story that illustrates this impact is from a village of Rohina. Before the project, villagers, particularly women and children, had to walk several kilometers each day to fetch water from a contaminated source. This daily task consumed hours of their time and exposed them to health risks from polluted water. We constructed a variety of individual and community rainwater harvesting systems in the village. I recall visiting shortly after the project was completed, and the transformation was remarkable. Women who once spent most of their day collecting water were now able to dedicate their time to other productive activities. Children, who previously missed school to help with water collection, were attending classes regularly, leading to improved educational outcomes.
One woman shared her experience with me. Before the project, she had to wake up before dawn to fetch water, which left her exhausted and with little time for her family or community work. With the new water source now just a short walk away, she was able to engage more in community activities and focus on her children’s education. Her quality of life improved significantly, and she became an advocate for the importance of clean water in her village.
Another positive outcome has been a decrease in waterborne diseases. With access to clean water, the incidence of illnesses related to contaminated water has dropped dramatically. This improvement in health has had a profound impact on the overall well-being of the community and reduced healthcare costs.
These stories and the tangible improvements in daily life highlight the significant impact of our water projects. They underscore how providing access to clean water not only meets a critical need but also empowers communities, enhances health, and opens up new opportunities for growth and development.
9. What changes have you witnessed as a result of our programs?
The changes I've witnessed as a result of our programs have been both profound and wide-ranging, impacting various aspects of community life. Here are a few key areas where our work has made a significant difference:
Improved Health and Hygiene: Our water and sanitation programs have led to noticeable improvements in public health. In several communities where we implemented clean water initiatives, there has been a marked reduction in waterborne diseases. For instance, in Rohina, the taanka facilities have significantly decreased the incidence of gastrointestinal illnesses, which previously were a major concern. This has not only improved overall health but also reduced the burden of medication.
Economic Empowerment: Our economic development programs have empowered many individuals to achieve financial independence. For example, in the Thar Artisan Collective (TAC), women participated in skill training and earned income through product development. Women of self-help groups (SHGs) who participated in our vocational training programs have started their own small businesses, such as tailoring services, and grocery shops. This economic empowerment has improved their financial stability and boosted their confidence, enabling them to contribute more effectively to their families and communities.
Enhanced Community Cohesion: By involving community members in the planning and implementation of our projects, we’ve fostered greater community cohesion and ownership. The participatory approach we used in our development projects has strengthened local leadership and enhanced collaboration among residents. This has led to more sustainable and community-driven development outcomes, as well as a greater sense of pride and investment in the projects.
Empowered Women and Girls: Perhaps one of the most rewarding changes is the increased empowerment of women and girls. Through our various programs, we’ve seen women gain greater autonomy and confidence, and girls pursuing education and leadership roles in their communities. Where women involved in our leadership training program have taken on key roles in local governance and advocacy, demonstrating their newfound skills and influence.
These changes highlight the impactful nature of our programs and the positive ripple effects they create within the communities we serve. It’s inspiring to see how our efforts contribute to meaningful and lasting improvements in people’s lives.

This approach has shaped my leadership style, encouraging me to foster an open and supportive work environment where everyone feels valued and motivated.
He showed me how to approach challenges with creativity and resilience. His method of breaking down complex problems into manageable components and exploring unconventional solutions has helped me tackle obstacles more effectively in my own work. This has been particularly valuable in navigating the often complex and unpredictable nature of community development projects.
He emphasized the importance of staying informed and continuously seeking new knowledge. His dedication to lifelong learning has inspired me to pursue further education, attend relevant workshops, and stay updated with the latest trends and best practices in our field.
